U.S. Marshal Killed Serving Warrant In West Virginia

Three U.S. marshals were shot while serving a warrant in Elkins, W. Va., with state police this morning at the home of a suspect who had failed to appear in court on drug and firearms charges.

The marshals and West Virginia State Police troopers arrived at the home of Charles Smith at 8:30 a.m. to serve the failure-to-appear warrant. The officers announced they were there to serve the warrant, and then breached the door.

Smith opened fire with a shotgun, hitting one marshal in the neck, one in his bulletproof vest and one in the arm or hand. A marshal and trooper then fired at Smith, killing him, reports the Charleston Gazette.

One marshall has succumbed to his injuries, according to a Reuters report.
