U.C. Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau was informed batons were being used to forcibly remove student Occupy protestors, reports the San Francisco Chronicle . Students and faculty members have criticized officers, calling the force excessive.
The review board is investigating the Nov. 9 protest. In two open letters to the campus community, Birgeneau told faculty he had prohibited police from using tear gas or pepper spray, but didn't acknowledge that he knew police used batons.
The e-mail prompted the Faculty Senate to pass four resolutions disapproving of Birgeneau's handling of the protest at its November meeting.
