TX Cop Shot by Man Using Human Shield

A Borger, TX, police officer was shot Monday evening by a man using a family member as a human shield during a domestic disturbance. One round hit the officer’s arm, but the other was stopped by his department-issued ballistic vest. His injuries, according to police, were not life threatening.

“Thankfully, the officer was wearing his department-issued body armor and his vest absorbed most of the impact,” a Borger Police Department social media post states. The officer has now been treated and released from the hospital.

The wounded officer, Cpl. Brock Tullos, has served with the department for more than 10 years.

Police say officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and the man using a family member as a human shield fired shots, striking Tullos. The wounded officer was flown to a hospital in Amarillo for treatment.

Sgt. Clay Stanford returned fire but did not strike the suspect. Officers arrested Gerardo “Jerry” Rodriguez, 38, and he is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. Police say there may be additional charges.
