Two men have been charged in the fatal shooting of a Woburn (Mass.) Police officer who responded to an attempted robbery call at a Kohl's department store and engaged two suspects, reports the Boston Globe.
Just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Woburn PD's Officer John B. "Jack" Maguire, a 34-year veteran of the force, responded to an attempted robbery by three men at a Kohl's during a snowstorm.
The men were robbing the store's jewelry counter, reports WCVB TV.
Maguire returned fire after a foot pursuit of Scott Hanwright, 19, and a yet-identified suspect who fired at the officer. The officer was struck by two rounds in the chest, and struck that suspect who died at the scene.
Officers continued to pursue Hanwright, arresting him when he entered a waiting vehicle driven by Kevin Dingwell, 51, who was also arrested and charged.
Earlier in the day, Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin declared a snow emergency in anticipation of a winter storm expected to dump 18 inches or more of snow, accompanied by driving winds and blizzard conditions.
