TN Deputy Shot in Leg During Pursuit of Domestic Disturbance Suspect
“While deputies continued to pursue the suspect on foot, we rendered aid to the injured deputy by applying a tourniquet above the wound to prevent further loss of blood," says Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan.
Tuesday night a Wilson County, TN, deputy was shot in the leg during a multi-county vehicle pursuit stemming from a domestic disturbance.
“The injured deputy is expected to make a full recovery after receiving medical treatment for a gunshot wound to his lower leg,” says Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan. “While deputies continued to pursue the suspect on foot, we rendered aid to the injured deputy by applying a tourniquet above the wound to prevent further loss of blood.”
Bryan tells WSMV4 the pursuit began after the suspect, 22-year-old Billy Randel Bennett, of Gordonsville, was involved in a domestic dispute in Smith County.
Deputies in Smith County alerted the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office of the pursuit and they assisted once it crossed over county lines. The Tennessee Highway Patrol also joined the pursuit.
The sheriff’s department reports Bennett eventually pulled over, exited his vehicle, and began firing shots towards a deputy’s vehicle striking him in the lower leg. Deputies followed Bennett on foot and then the suspect climbed on top of a garage while holding a handgun and firing shots into the air.
Deputies convinced Bennett to drop the firearm and come down from the garage where he was taken into custody without further incident. He is being held in the Wilson County Jail with a total bond of $205,000.
