A Greenville, Texas, police officer was shot and killed Monday when he was ambushed during a foot pursuit. The mortally wounded officer returned fire hit the suspect.
Texas Officer Killed in Foot Pursuit Ambush
Officer Cooper Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times. Despite being mortally wounded, he returned fire, striking the suspect.

Greenville (Texas) Police Officer Cooper Dawson was ambushed and killed Monday during a foot pursuit.

The incident began with a 7:40 p.m. traffic stop by Officer Cooper Dawson. The traffic stop led to a foot pursuit. “While pursuing the suspect, Officer Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times. Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage, returning fire, and striking the suspect,” the department said on Facebook.
Officer Dawson and the suspect were transported to the hospital. Dawson was later airlifted to another hospital where he died.
The condition or identity of the wounded suspect have not been released.
Officer Dawson was a highly respected member of the Greenville Police Department and had previously served with the Garland Police Department, the Greenville PD said.
"We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community," said Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. "We ask that you keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
