Texas Deputy Dies from Complications of 2019 Shooting

A Liberty County, TX, Sheriff's deputy who was shot and wounded last May died this weekend from a heart attack during a physical therapy session at an area hospital.
Deputy Richard Whitten had rallied back after being shot once in the neck and paralyzed by a murder suspect who had killed two people at a Cleveland, TX, business. The suspect reportedly killed himself after fleeing the scene.
Last September, Whitten spoke to Bluebonnet News about the incident, sharing his upbeat attitude in the face of adversity.
“I know the odds are that I am not going to get out of here in the condition I want to be, but I still feel blessed. I am a God-fearing man. I believe that He is going to do for me whatever needs to be done. I pray to Him all the time,” Whitten said.
Liberty County Sheriff's deputies rushed to the hospital to be with the family. Houston Police officers also arrived to provide support. Multiple agencies escorted Whitten's body to the Medical Examiner's office, KHOU 11 reports.
