The incident began Sunday evening, when the wife of Sergio O. Salazar fled to a nearby residence to call police after allegedly being injured by Salazar. The wife was treated for moderate injuries and placed in protective custody.
The LAPD's SWAT unit used tear gas and "hot gas," and later exchanged gunfire with Salazar. The LAPD brought forklift-type equipment, and began tearing down parts of the two-story house. Salazar was found dead in the home Monday night, when officers entered the building.
Officer Jenkins, whose wife is an LAPD sergeant, was
hit twice
. The first round struck the right side of his face and exited near his jaw, while the second entered near his right clavicle, fracturing several ribs and damaging a lung.
