A St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer was killed Sunday morning when he was struck by a vehicle on I-70 while working a crash scene.

Chief Robert Tracy said the officer was behind his patrol car retrieving traffic cones for the original crash, when a driver lost control of their vehicle, spun out and hit him.

Officer David Lee, 44, died of his injuries Sunday afternoon. He was an 18-year police veteran. Lee leaves behind a wife and two children, First Alert 4 reports.
SLMPD Chief Robert Tracy said Lee was behind his patrol car retrieving traffic cones for the original crash, when a driver lost control of their vehicle, spun out and hit Lee.
Lee was rushed to a hospital for treatment and died in surgery.
The driver who reportedly struck Officer Lee, Ramon Arnaldo Chavez-Rodriguez, was charged Monday with DWI and speeding, KSDK reports.
