Southern California College Locked Down by Hoax Call About Shooter on Campus

Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California, was shut down Thursday March 13 after a report of a possible shooter. The incident was determined to be a swatting call.

An unidentified caller to the Claremont Police Department around 4:45 p.m. Thursday said they were inside a restroom on campus holding a victim as a hostage and threatening to harm them, police said.

Police stated that the caller also alleged they had a bomb and were going to begin walking around campus with a rifle and shoot anyone within range, ABC7 reports.

Officers from the Claremont, La Verne, Ontario and Upland police departments arrived at the campus to investigate the call.

By 7:30 p.m., however, the campus announced a shelter in place had been lifted and that police determined there was "no active threat."

"Extensive resources were used in response to the call for service, which was later determined to be a false report or 'swatting call,'" police said.
