South Dakota Allows Armed Teachers

South Dakota's Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law Friday allowing teachers to carry guns in their classrooms to protect against active shooters.

Supporters say the bill is required for a state like South Dakota, where some schools in rural areas are far away from first responders. The state school board association and teachers association oppose the measure.

The state is believed to be the first in the nation to enact such legislation as a response to the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Conn., reports the  New York Times .
