A Darlington County, South Carolina, Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Tuesday morning (July 1, 2025) at a local residence. Another deputy was wounded in the same attack.
The suspect was killed.
Darlington County Sheriff Michael August said the two deputies were ambushed inside of a residence while responding about a wanted person.

A Darlington County, South Carolina, Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Tuesday morning (July 1, 2025) at a local residence. Another deputy was wounded in the same attack.
The suspect was killed.
Sheriff Michael August said in a statement the two deputies were ambushed inside of a residence while responding about a wanted person.
Deputy Devin Mason, 27, died from his wounds. The second wounded deputy who has not been named is reportedly stable.
The sheriff’s office has identified the deceased suspect as Cameron Ray Dennett, 25. “Dennett was prohibited from having a firearm. He had active warrants for Criminal Conspiracy, Forgery, and Computer Act 2nd Degree,” the sheriff’s office said.
Kristen Porter, 28, was arrested at the scene. The sheriff’s office said she had active warrants for Criminal Conspiracy, 2 counts for Forgery, and Computer Act 2nd Degree.
Deputy Mason joined the Darlington County SO in 2024 and graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy on March 28, 2025. “He successfully completed his field training last week. In his time with us, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity, and professionalism,” the sheriff’s office said.
