The Seattle Police Department mistakenly disciplined the wrong officer in a case involving two cops who assaulted a jaywalker in the Rainier Valley, a department official said Wednesday.

The mistake meant the officer who was supposed to be disciplined – after punching a handcuffed suspect – escaped a permanent punitive mark on his record, in a case that prompted outcry about police aggressiveness earlier this year.

"A lot went wrong in the end," said Kathryn Olson, director of the department's Office of Professional Accountability, in a Seattle City Council briefing Wednesday. Councilmembers questioned Olson on why her office took so long to investigate the case and how it made the mistake.
