A San Diego police K-9 was stabbed when officers subdued a knife-wielding man at a local motel earlier this week. The dog was treated and released from an animal hospital.

The two-year-old German shepherd named Jake was stabbed several times during a confrontation with a 43-year-old man who was reportedly waving a knife and threatening people at a local Travel Lodge.

Police say they arrived at the motel at 8:40 p.m. and tried to talk Patrick Gautier into surrendering but Gautier would not comply. Gautier was shot twice with bean-bag rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun.

Gautier, who was hospitalized following the incident for dog bites and the effects of the bean-bag rounds, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, and assault on a police service dog.

Reports say that Officer Larry Adair, Jake's handler, confronted Gautier on the motel's third floor. Gautier then allegedly approached the officer with the knife. Police say that Officer Adair released Jake when Gautier refused to stop. Jake was stabbed in the altercation. Adair shot at Gautier with his service pistol but missed.

As other officers took Gautier into custody, Adair swept up Jake in his arms and rushed him to his patrol car and to an emergency animal hospital.
