A San Diego Police sergeant was shot during the pursuit of a suspected car thief Thursday night. The officer has not been identified, but authorities report he is expected to make a full recovery.

A San Diego Police Department sergeant was wounded Thursday night as he and other officers tried to approach a man suspected of stealing a car. The officer was struck in the head, and according to police is expected to survive.

San Diego County sheriff’s officials told 10NEWS that San Diego Police officers were notified of a reported stolen vehicle at around 10 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle was then located about 11:30 p.m.
Officers responded to a shopping area, found the car, and the suspect car thief was inside a store. Officers attempted to make contact, but the man fled on foot.
According to officials, the suspect fired at least one shot at the officers, striking the sergeant in the head. Multiple officers returned fire and the suspect was struck several times. He later died at an area hospital, around 1 a.m. Friday.
The sergeant was admitted to the ICU at an area hospital, where he underwent surgery according to the police department. By Friday morning, according to NBC7, he was reported to be recovering from the surgery but was still listed in serious condition.
The police department, in a social media post Friday morning, said the officer is expected to survive.
