In the moments before the accidental shooting of a Nassau County (N.Y.) Police officer by an MTA officer, retired NYPD Sgt. John Cafarella may have yelled "gun," triggering the shooting.
Cafarella was in the area and had stopped to offer his help. The New York Times is reporting the retired NYPD sergeant yelled "gun," after seeing Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf arrive on-scene with a rifle.
According to an audio recording of the incident, following the fatal shooting of Breitkopf, a cop is heard yelling, "MOS [member of service] shot in the face!"
Officers shot 21-year-old Anthony DiGeronimo, who had lunged at them with a knife. Following the shooting, MTA Officer Glenn Gentile shot Officer Breitkopf, who responded as a member of the Bureau of Special Operations.
