The incident began around 1:20 p.m. in the parking lot of the agency's southeast district office when an officer saw a man setting vehicles on fire using Molotov cocktails, the chief said.
The officer then summoned other officers who arrived in the parking lot, Patterson said. Police told the man to stop throwing the incendiary weapons, Patterson said.
However, the man continued to throw Molotov cocktails in the parking lot and two Raleigh police cruisers were engulfed in flames,

All four officers involved in the incident fired their weapons. The suspect was hit multiple times.
He was transported to a hospital where he died.
