ProPublica Publishes NYPD Discipline Records Online

The non-profit news organization ProPublica obtained and then published in an online database the disciplinary records of nearly 4,000 officers with the New York Police department.

According to NY1.com , ProPublica got the records of active-duty officers with at least one substantiated complaint against them from the Civilian Complaint Review Board. There are roughly 4,000 officers in the database, which is searchable by name and badge number.

Incidents described in the data range from excessive force to the use of offensive language.

ProPublica Deputy Managing Editor Eric Umansky said in a statement, "The vast majority of New York City police officers have never had a complaint substantiated against them. And actually most have had very few if any complaints overall. So these are records of a tiny fraction overall of the police."
