Peery was with his caretaker and four children, reports NewsOK .

Peery was off duty on Feb. 15, 2011, when bar employees asked him to help remove several rowdy patrons. Two men beat him while a third held others back.

Perry inspired other officers with his progress in rehabilitation. He remained on the job, working in the department's computer crimes division.

"The Peery family lost a devoted son and a father," Capt. Dexter Nelson told KFOR . "Law enforcement has lost a valued partner and brother. The community lost a public servant and hero."
