SEARCHUnder the new law inmates convicted of domestic abuse would have to serve half their term before they are eligible for parole.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill into law making domestic assault a violent crime. Advocates said the reclassification will save lives.
“And what that means is that if a person is convicted for a domestic related offense, he or she will have to spend more time in prison before they would be eligible to be released,” Kris Steele with Oklahomans for Criminal Justice Reform told News9 .
Those convicted of domestic abuse would have to serve half their term before they’re eligible for parole.
The law goes into effect November 1.
