The Oak Creek (Wis.) Police officer who was hit by 12 rounds during the Sikh Temple shooting was forced to retire, after doctors wouldn't clear him to return to police work.
Lt. Brian Murphy, 52, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that doctors told him he hadn't healed enough to return to work. He still has physical issues with his left thumb and has no feeling in his right forearm and one leg. His voice is raspy because of a wound to his throat.
Lt. Murphy was the first officer on the scene, after Wade Michael Page opened fire on Aug. 5, killing six Sikh worshipers. A second Oak Creek PD officer, Sam Lenda, shot and killed Page to end the rampage.
Murphy's 22-year law enforcement career will end June 12.
