Officer En Route to Emergency Call Strikes, Kills 71-Year-Old Pedestrian

The Baltimore County Police Crash Tream is investigating an incident in which a Baltimore County Police officer reportedly struck and killed a pedestrian — identified as 71-year-old Robert Louis Mayo — Saturday night, according to WTOP Radio .

The officer was reportedly en route to a 911 call of a home invasion and possible shooting when he "entered the center turn lane to bypass traffic and struck Mayo," said the WTOP report.

Mayo was crossing Liberty Road and was not using a crosswalk, police say. After he was struck, he was thrown into the opposing traffic lane, where he was struck a second time by an oncoming Ford Explorer.

Mayo was pronounced dead at the scene and the officer was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

"Body worn camera footage has been reviewed and supports the initial findings of the investigation. It is not expected to be released publicly due to the graphic nature of the video," BCPD said in a statement
