Off-Duty Detroit Officer, Girlfriend Killed in Single Vehicle Collision

Officer James Hearn was driving home with his girlfriend after volunteering with the Detroit Police Department's Team-Up program — aimed at mentoring young people — when his "vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a light standard or pole," according to WDIV .

Hearn had worked at the Detroit Police Department for more than four years.

Chief James Craig said that Hearn loved working with the police athletic program and other programs benefiting young people.

"James was what I would call the ultimate community police officer," Craig said.

The crash is still under investigation.
