NYPD Officers Exonerated In Harlem Shootout

The four officers who fired nearly 50 shots while breaking up a Harlem block party in August won't face charges relating to the shootout.

Sgt. Paul Kerrigan, Officer Michael Tedeschi, Officer Thomas Cozart and Officer Douglas Brightman fired 46 rounds during a frantic 10-second span after responding to the 500-person block party. Officers fired at Angel Alvarez and Luis Soto , who had fought. A revolver found at the scene was believed to belong to Soto, who likely died from a police round.

Police arrested Alvarez , who received 23 gunshot wounds and later told officers Soto had fired at him. On Wednesday, a grand jury decided not to bring charges against the 24-year-old Alvarez.

Officer Brightman had said Alvarez had a gun and had fired at him.
