A Nassau County (N.Y.) Police Department officer died early Thursday after he was hit by an SUV while responding to a wild wreck on the Long Island Expressway, authorities said.
Joseph Olivieri, 43, was clipped by a Cadillac Escalade as he helped a motorist out of a vehicle involved in an accident near exit 35 in North Hills about 4:35 a.m., officials said.
The former NYPD officer, who joined the Nassau County Police Department 13 years ago, radioed for help. Emergency workers rushed him to North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital.
But Olivieri, a Middle Island father of two grown children, could not be saved.
