Northern Ireland Officers Targeted in Border Explosion

Police in Northern Ireland were the target of an explosion near the border with the Irish Republic, authorities said. There are no reports of injuries.

According to NBC News , officers had been investigating a scene in County Fermanagh near the border with the Republic when an explosion occurred on Monday.

Simon Byrne—Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland—said on Twitter, " The bomb attack in Fermanagh this morning is a sinister development. A clear and deliberate attempt to murder @PoliceServiceNI officers. I strongly condemn these actions and express my sincere thanks to both the Officers and Army personnel for their work in securing the area."

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement largely ended the violence that existed on both sides of the border during the period known as "The Troubles" police officers in Northern Ireland are still occasionally targeted by Irish Nationalists.
