North Carolina Officer Killed in Collision with Heavy Equipment

A Tarboro, N.C., police officer was killed in a wreck involving an NCDOT vehicle in Edgecombe County, authorities said.

The Tarboro Police Department told WCTI , Officer Charles Johnson was killed in the wreck on N.C. 111 near McKendree Church Road at about 8:40 a.m.Tuesday.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the accident involved Johnson's vehicle and an NCDOT excavator truck that had just left a maintenance yard.

Johnson died at the scene.
