North Carolina Agency's Civilian Active Shooter Training Fills Up in 2 Hours

Citizens interested in learning about how to respond to an active shooter in their community were given the opportunity to attend a class presented by the Clayton (NC) Police Department, and registrations for the class filled up in two hours.

According to a post on the agency's Facebook page, the February class for citizens of the Raleigh suburb was announced in early January and just two hours later all seats were full.

The agency posted, "This class filled up extremely quickly. This is the first time we've offered this class and based on feedback, we will be looking to offer an additional class in February, perhaps in a larger venue. Please check back! Participants registered will receive a confirmation email."

Keith Garner of the Clayton Police Department told WRAL that men and women of all ages and even heads of security at area churches registered for the training.

"We are going to try to host one of these classes every month," Garner said.

Garner said that he hopes his students will never need to use the "Avoid, Deny and Defend" skills but it's best to be prepared.
