N.M. Court: Tribal Officer's Widow Entitled to Benefits

The widow of an off-duty tribal New Mexico officer who died trying to save a boy is entitled to receive workers' compensation benefits, a state appellate court ruled Tuesday.

Cheryl Schultz has been waging a legal battle since 2007, when a judge rejected her claim. Kevin Schultz served with the Pojoaque Police Department.

Kevin Schultz was fishing with a group of children from his church when a 12-year-old boy fell into the Rio Grande River. After pulling the boy from the river, Schultz collapsed in shallow water and drowned, reports the Associated Press .
