New York Officer Shot in the Leg Last Week Faces Long Recovery

An Albany, New York, police officer who was shot in the leg last Wednesday faces a long recovery, according to a GoFundMe page.
Officer Jonathan Damphier was checking on a parked vehicle that he had previously spotted speeding on April 17. Police say a suspect later identified as Amiel Layeni, 28, came around the back of the parked vehicle and opened fire on Damphier.
The officer was hit in the upper leg. He returned fire, and the suspect reportedly killed himself.
A supporter who set up the GoFundMe page for Officer Damphier and his family says the officer suffered a shattered femur. “The surgeons had to insert a rod to secure the broken femur, but were unable to remove all of the fragments of the bullet as they were too close to his femoral artery,” the author of the page wrote.
The GoFundMe page says, “Doctors believe his injury will require months of physical therapy, and he will likely not be able to return to work for many months to come.”
At presstime the page had raised $36,000.
