An off-duty officer with the Nassau County (NY) Police Department died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday.

According to Newsday, the 27-year Nassau police veteran took his own life at his Massapequa home on Monday evening.

Police reportedly responded to a call of a shooting and discovered the officer—whose name has not been released—mortally wounded.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
