Nebraska Deputy, Teen Suspect Wounded in Sunday Gunfight

Douglas County, NE, authorities say a 17-year-old male opened fire on a sheriff’s deputy with a shotgun early Sunday morning. One deputy and the suspect were wounded in the ensuing gunfight, which involved two deputies and an Omaha police officer.

The incident began shortly before 5 a.m. when deputies were called to a residence where it was initially reported that someone with a baseball bat was assaulting his parents, Capt. Steve Glandt of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

The first deputy arrived on the scene and reported that the teenager was armed with a shotgun.

Other deputies and an officer from the Omaha Police Department arrived soon after.

The suspect fired his weapon at the law enforcement officers, and Dep. John McFarland and Dep. Dale Keen returned fire, hitting the suspect, authorities report.

The wounded deputy, McFarland, was treated at Lakeside Hospital. He was released early Sunday afternoon after gunshot pellets were removed from his hand and forearm, Sheriff Tim Dunning told the Omaha World-Herald .

The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, where he was in stable condition but will need more surgery.

The suspect’s name was not released.
