Murder Charges Filed Against Arizona Shooting Suspect
The 22-year-old suspected shooter of 18 people, including an Arizona congresswoman, makes his first court appearance on Monday to answer five federal counts.
Jared Lee Loughner will appear in federal court Monday in Phoenix to face two murder charges and three attempted murder charges in the politically charged shooting in Tucson on Saturday.
Loughner is suspected of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, U.S. District Court Judge John Roll, Giffords' staff member Gabriel Zimmerman and approximately 16 others on Saturday.
The federal government's five-count indictment, filed on Sunday, names Loughner in the deaths of Roll and Zimmerman, as well as the injuries to Congresswoman Giffords, staffer Pamela Simon and staffer Ron Barber.
Loughner is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. Mountain Time on Monday (Jan. 10) in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Anderson in Phoenix. Judge Anderson is expected to schedule a preliminary hearing and detention hearing. Loughner remains in federal custody.
