An officer with the Kansas City (MO) Police Department who was found suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound has reportedly died.

On Saturday the department said on Twitter, "We had information he'd gone missing and was suicidal. As of this afternoon, he remains in the hospital on life support, awaiting organ donation recipients."

The officer—who has not yet been identified—was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was kept on life support while organ donor recipients were identified and located.

According to reports, that officer has now passed away.

Authorities found the wounded officer in his vehicle in the parking lot of a local church on Friday night after the family of the officer reported him missing and at risk of doing harm to himself earlier in the day.

Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 Brad Lemon told Fox News, "I can name every single police officer who has died in the line of duty since I have been on the job. I cannot come close to naming everybody who has taken their own lives. That is how bad it is in our field, and something has to change."
