Milwaukee Officer Wounded During Domestic Response, 4 Children Rescued

A Milwaukee police officer was shot and wounded while responding to a domestic violence situation on the city's northwest side near Lincoln Park on Tuesday morning.

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said a man from inside a home shot at police officers on two occasions. The officers returned shots each time. On the second occasion, an officer was hit and wounded, the Journal Sentinel reports.

Four children were inside the home at the time, he said.

The shooting led to a standoff that lasted another 2½ hours when the suspect initially did not let children inside the home leave. Norman said the children were eventually released safely and the suspect, a 25-year-old man, was arrested without further incident.

The wounded officer is a 38-year-old man with more than 16 years of experience, Norman said.

The Milwaukee Police Association president told FOX6 News the officer was shot in the leg.
