The Inkster (Mich.) Police Department laid off more than 20% of its officers today, and Chief Gregory Gaskin will retire in January, reports the Detroit News .
Fourteen officers were laid off from the agency, leaving 47 sworn members of the force. Among those laid off were three newly hired officers. The city of 26,000 recorded 11 homicides in 2010.
