Among other crimes, Rejon was wanted in connection with the Feb. 15 ambush death of
Jaime Zapata
, a special agent with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency on assignment in Mexico. A Zetas gangster arrested earlier said cartel gunmen mistook the agents for members of a rival gang.
Rejon Aguilar was one of three Mexican Army deserters who founded the paramilitary Zetas gang around 1999 as an armed protection force for the Gulf cartel. Earlier this year, the Zetas broke away to form their own drug trafficking organization. Of the original Zetas, only Heriberto Lazcano remains at large.
