Mayor Richard Berry wants the U.S. Department of Justice to monitor the Albuquerque police force as his administration tries to improve officer training and carry out other reforms, the Albuquerque Journal reports.
In a letter to the department, Berry asked the DOJ to begin negotiating an agreement for the monitoring. That could include the appointment of one or more monitors who would establish performance measures and evaluate the city’s progress, he said.
Berry also asked the Department of Justice to expedite its 16-month investigation into whether APD has a pattern or practice of violating people’s civil rights. He hopes the DOJ will transmit any preliminary findings or recommendations it can “at this time.”
