Massachusetts Officer Seriously Wounded at Domestic

A Wilbraham (Massachusetts) Police officer was shot and seriously wounded Saturday night during a call at a home.

Mass. State Police spokesperson David Procopio said that a Wilbraham police officer exchanged gunfire with a 53-year-old male, later identified as Michael Ortega, at the home around 8:20 p.m. Other occupants of the home escaped through a second floor window onto a lower roof. They were then assisted off of the roof by officers using a ladder.

Wilbraham Police Chief Edward Lennon told Western Mass News that a 29-year-old male officer sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The officer, as of 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, was listed in stable condition.

Ortega was later located in the home with gunshot injuries. He was transported to an area hospital and as of 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, is in stable condition.

Troopers from the Springfield barracks, a K-9 team, negotiators, and their Special Tactical Operations (STOP) team responded to the scene.
