Officers with the New York Police Department are unhappy that a man who in 1997 opened fired on police was quickly released after being re-arrested for drug and weapons violations.
According to the New York Post, the man—identified as Stathos Hugunnie—was 21 years old when he opened fire on Officer Peter Bueti in the Queensbridge houses in Long Island City in 1997.
Hugunnie was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal weapons possession and criminal use of a firearm, and jailed until his release in 2017.
In early November, police returned to the same apartment complex that was the scene of the 1997 shooting to serve a warrant and found Hugunnie in possession of drugs and guns.
Hugunnie was arrested and charged but soon thereafter released on $5,000 bail.
PBA President Patrick Lynch in a statement said, "Cops will continue to lock up perps like Hugunnie whenever they get caught with guns, but it will make no difference. Soon, they will be walking out the door before the ink on the arrest report is dry."
