Man Found Guilty of Murdering 2 CA Police Officers

A jury needed less than a day of deliberations to determine that John Hernandez Felix is guilty of first-degree murder in the 2016 shooting deaths of Officers Jose Vega and Lesley Zerebny .

According to the Sacramento Bee , the jury also found Felix guilty on six counts of attempted murder in the wounding of the officers who rushed after their fallen comrades.

Vega was a veteran who was due to retire after 35 years on the force, according to the Associated Press. Partner Zerebny, a new mother, had just returned from maternity leave.

Felix now faces the penalty phase of the trial, where a death penalty sentence will be considered, even though California's governor has declared a moratorium on executions.
