Hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to an active shooting situation in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood Wednesday morning, spurring an hourslong standoff and massive shootout before the suspect was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.

Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies went to a residence to serve an eviction notice when the suspect began shooting, sheriff’s office spokesman Mike Manko said. The deputies returned fire. One deputy was injured but not by gunfire, officials say.

Law enforcement officials were trying to get people in the area safely evacuated from their homes. Hundreds of shots had been ringing out in the area starting around 11 a.m., and the shooting continued into the early evening, the Post-Gazette reports.

Officials have painted a picture of how the situation ended. Police endured a final volley from the suspect inside the home. Police then flew a drone over the house and located the suspect. SWAT officers concentrated fire on that part of the house and the suspect was fatally wounded, KDKA reports.
