The Los Angeles City Council has sided with an administrator's recommendation to halt police hiring until July 1 to help close a $54-million budget gap, the Los Angels Times reports.
City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana suggested halting Los Angeles Police Department hiring until July 1, when a city measure goes into effect trimming the retirement benefits of newly hired officers.
The move will affect one class of about 50 officers, dropping the total sworn force to 9,890 by July 1. The council approved Santana's recommendation on Wednesday.
