The Los Angeles school police officer who staged a shooting hoax that resulted in a massive police manhunt in the San Fernando Valley was sentenced to five years in county jail today. He will likely serve a fraction of that time.

In a non-jury trial in September, L.A. County Superior Court Judge Richard N. Kirschner convicted Jeffrey Stenroos, 31, of several felonies and a misdemeanor charge including planting false evidence, insurance fraud and workers' compensation fraud, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Stenroos, in January, reported he had been shot in the chest by a suspect. The eight-year Los Angeles School Police veteran initially later told officers he had accidentally fired his weapon. Los Angeles police detectives eventually unravelled the story when ballistics tests didn't support his version of events.
