Kansas Deputy Injured, Man Killed by Buffalo
The deputy was dispatched to the area Sunday evening where he found the animal and attempted to get it to return to a pasture. The buffalo charged and injured the deputy, and another deputy shot and killed the animal before it could attack again.
An Ellsworth County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured Sunday by a buffalo. The deputy was responding to a call of a buffalo standing in K-4 highway.
In a release, the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was dispatched to the area Sunday evening where he found the animal and attempted to get it to return to a pasture. The buffalo charged and injured the deputy, and a Rice County deputy killed the animal before it could attack again.
The injured deputy was transported by Claflin EMS to the Ellsworth County Medical Center and later, to Salina Regional Health Center. The injured deputy underwent surgery and is reportedly in stable condition.
Monday morning Ellsworth County 911 received a call from a lady who said she needed an ambulance because she had found her nephew dead in a pen and that she thought a buffalo had killed him. He owned 20 buffalo.
Ellsworth County Deputies and Claflin EMS were dispatched to the scene.
It’s believed the man was gored to death by the animal that attacked the injured deputy.
The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Scott Schroeder of rural Bushton, KS.
