The Copley Township (Ohio) Police Department officer who ended Michael Hance's Sunday killing rampage has served with the agency for more than a decade, an investigator has told POLICE Magazine.

Officer Ben Campbell has served with the agency as a part-time officer since 2000. He was hired by the agency as a full-time patrol officer in 2003, said Summit County Sheriff's Office Inspector William Holland.

Officer Campbell was joined at the scene at Schocalog Road and Goodenough Avenue by Keith Lavery , a former Copley Township PD officer who has described him as a "battle buddy." Officer Campbell — armed with an AR-15 patrol rifle — and former cop Lavery — armed with a handgun — then confronted Hance, after he had killed seven people and wounded an eighth.

The two men fired at Hance. Two .223 rounds from Officer Campbell struck Hance, killing him at the scene, Chief Michael Mier has said.

Inspector Holland declined to release any additional details, citing the ongoing investigation. The Summit County Sheriff's Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
