Public Safety Officer Poe and other officers were called to an InTown Suites motel at around 6 p.m. on June 20.
They found three animals in a hot car: a German shepherd, a pit bull, and a cat, WISH reports.
Officials say the German shepherd was honking the horn to call attention to her plight. The pit bull, which was chained to the floor was dead.
The pit bull was dead. The cat and the German shepherd recovered from heat injuries at a local vet.
A 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were arrested for animal cruelty. They said they left the animals in the vehicle because the motel did not allow pets.
Public Safety Officer Poe adopted the German shepherd after the dog recovered.
“I switched her collar, and it was like Abby knew she was home for good,” Poe said in an IMPD statement on Facebook.
