The United States House of Representatives on Thursday approved draft legislation named for George Floyd, whose in-custody death last month has sparked weeks of widespread civil unrest and calls for police reform.

According to CNN, the legislation was put forward by House Democrats and is not expected to be voted upon in the Senate, making the House vote largely symbolic.
Democrats recently blocked a competing Republican bill in the Senate, causing what is essentially a party-line stalemate on any effort to improve police-community relations at the federal level.
The House bill would hold police officers personally liable for damages in lawsuits, ban no-knock warrants often used by police in drug raids, and halt the flow of military surplus equipment to police departments.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at a press event, "Today with the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, the House is honoring his life and the lives of all those killed by police brutality."
