Former Orlando police Chief John Mina was elected Orange County’s next sheriff Tuesday night, defeating two opponents to replace Mayor-elect Jerry Demings as the county’s top law enforcement official.

Mina will now lead the largest law-enforcement agency in Central Florida, with a $250-million budget and about 2,600 full-time employees, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Mina, 50, ran as an independent in a three-man field and campaigned primarily on his four-year tenure as Orlando police chief. Mina originally joined the Orlando Police Department in 1991 and served in various roles before being appointed chief in 2014. He retired from the Orlando PD in October.
