Former New Jersey Officer Sentenced to 1 Year in Prison for Role in Off-Duty Jobs Scam

A federal judge sentenced a former Jersey City officer on Tuesday to one year and one day behind bars over the ex-officer's role in a scheme to accept cash for off-duty jobs he never worked, according to NJ.com .

Jimmy Cardinali said at the proceedings, "I stand here before you a man filled with shame and regret. I've embarrassed myself, the Jersey City Police Department and of course my family."

Cardinali is the fourth former officer to receive a prison sentence in scandal. Six others have received probation, including former chief Phil Zacche.

Cardinali was also ordered to forfeit $39,587, which represents the money he pocketed, and pay $166,255 in restitution to Jersey City.
